Restore Healthy Gums with Scaling and Root Planing and Revolutionary Arestin® Antibiotic System

At Complete Dentistry of SoCal in Poway, California, we are uncompromising in our approach to quality dental care customized to each patient. Led by Dr. Erela Katz Rappaport, our skilled and caring team partners with individuals and their families to keep their mouths healthy. During regular visits, we evaluate the health of the teeth and the health of the surrounding tissues and structures that protect and support the teeth: the gums.

Routine exams and cleanings at our office prevent destructive gum disease. But, if gum disease is identified, we offer many treatments, including scaling and root planing.

About SRP

The “standard” professional cleaning at our office is usually scheduled once every six months or twice a year. The cleaning involves our trained dental hygienists using specialized instruments to remove bacteria, plaque, tartar, and surface stains from the teeth and gum lines.

SRP is considered a “deep clean” alternative to the standard 6-month cleaning. It may be appropriate for patients with active gum disease. The process involves removing pathogens, including plaque, from underneath the gum line. The “planing” part of the process consists of smoothing the tooth’s rough root surfaces. These surfaces attract plaque and other disease-causing substances.

SRP is also a non-surgical alternative to other periodontal therapies.

Restoring Your Healthy Gums

Cleaning deep periodontal pockets can be challenging. Since it is vital to remove harmful bacteria from the pockets or spaces that form between the teeth and gums as the disease progresses, Dr. Rappaport may recommend Arestin® in conjunction with SRP.

Arestin® is a unique antibiotic designed to non-invasively kill the bacteria responsible for periodontal (gum) disease. Instead of antibiotic pills, we place Arestin® microspheres or tiny particles precisely into the areas or pockets that need the bacteria-fighter the most. In turn, Arestin® supports optimal healing following SRP. Dr. Rappaport may place the antibiotic in the pockets underneath the gum line during your cleaning or when following up with you as ongoing maintenance therapy.
